RAD Hewer
RAD Enlisted Man or Subordinate Hewer.
Maker Ed.Wüstof Solingen, Blade Marks - GES. GESCH.- Trident inside double oval TM.
I will not disassemble this piece to search for numbers.
Made in the year Unknown pre RZM
Solid Nickel hilt fittings show minor surface wear with 80% of factory darkening remaining in detail of cross guard.
The cross guard and blade tang show a few minor dings.
Dark brown stag horn grip plates are perfect with no chips or cracks.
Polished blade grades Exc. showing minor surface wear/runner marks, no nicks to cutting edge.
Blade has never been sharpened.
This piece has not been used as a hammer!
Deeply etched motto retains 100% of the gray background frosting marked with the RAD Triangle Logo and the words, "Ges.Gesch."
The scabbard retains 70% of the original black enamel showing surface
paint loss
and scratches on center obverse and reverse.
Small dents , on nickel scabbard tip on obverse, remaining fittings and showing minor surface wear,
This RAD Hewer is of early construction and is very heavy.
All or the fittings are solid nickel, and appear to be silver-plated.
The hilt of this example has an excellent beak and ferrule at the hilt
area of the grip.
The cross guard is curled at the end and much of the original
blackening still appears to be in the crevices.
The silver has developed a patina.
The genuine stag grip plates are in excellent condition.
The grip plate screw heads show tool marks.
The steel scabbard shell is straight. It has about ¾’s of the original
black paint remaining.
The scabbard mounts are the solid type, with silver plating matching
the hilt.
The upper mount has the RAD curl designs and the lower mount has a
spade symbol with a swastika in the center.
The spade is over a set of wheat heads. These designs are on both
sides of the scabbard mounts on the EM pattern.
The edges of both mounts have circle bead designs.
These mounts have the original flathead screws, all show tool marks in
the slots.
The blade of this example is the typical matte finish Bowie style.
It is in excellent shape, having a little bit of smudge in the
surfaces, but it is not bad.
The Labor Corps motto is crisp and deeply etched.
Unlike some later pieces this etch is perfectly placed and does not
run into the fuller.
This blade certainly grades at excellent condition.
The reverse ricasso is matching etched with the RAD triangle
positioned over the patent pending words “Ges. Gesch.”.
Below this is the logo Maker Ed.Wüstof Solingen, Blade Marks - GES.

A very fine early Hewer here. These RADs are getting difficult to
find.
This piece has not been cleaned...
Research places the date of manufacture for this
as unknown. There are no Serial numbers on this item.
