German Luftwaffe Dress Sword WWII:

Blade Marks:
  F. & A. Helbig Steinbach an der Steyr
gaefler

 F. & A. Helbig Steinbach an der Steyr
gaefler

F&A Helbig was one of two makers operating in the city of Steinbach in the 1930's
and were among the earliest contractors for the FKm Type I's.
There are 92 towns named Steinbach. Each one uses a geographical point to distinguish it from the other.
In this case it's STEINBACH-GAEFLER.
The gaefler as some call it is to date unknown.

F&A was a small maker that held an early contract.

F&A Helbig facilities now function as a factory making electrical parts.
F&A Helbig (Frieda & Alfred Helbig) was the third largest producer of the early Type I FKms.
It's owners; Frieda and Alfred both died in 1984, thirty-nine years after their company was dissolved and it's property confiscated by the East German state .

The very earliest F&As had a LuftMT STAMPED IN THE CENTER OF THE OBVERSE ASPECT OF THE BLADE. These are fairly rare. And, as far as I know F&A only electro penned their numbers while all others stamped them. That's why the marks are so difficult to read.

The leather  grip is unaltered showing abrasion to the raised areas of the spirals.
This grip is complete with the original tight wire wrap.

The Polished, blade grades VG.+
Showing  surface wear and runner marks, with nicks to cutting edges.
Blade has nicks to the cutting edges fine "V" shape nicks caused by sword fighting.
I had to use a jewelers magnifying loop to identify the nicks, but as soon as I saw them I knew what they were!
Minor dents on the scabbard with lifting of the "Silver Plate"  is complete with leather blade buffer pad.
It's complete with scabbard suspension bands and hanger chains.

The coin shaped pommel has scratches and nicks towards the butt end.

See the abrasions to the grip leather.

This item is an early Luftwaffe dress sword with the aluminum fittings.

Will try to give an accurate assessment of the condition here, as I suspect you know about the sword’s dimensions etc.
Blade is, from hilt to tip = 26 1/2".
Sword total length = 33 3/8".
Scabbard = 27 1/2".
Total length when sheathed = 34 3/16".

Pommel: There are scratches and nicks but no dents in the “coin” area.
Engraving around the outer rim is good. aluminum is not tarnished.

Grip: Blue leather has some large scuffs showing the brown leather beneath in a many of places on one side, several places on the other. Wire wrap is complete and tight.

Ferrule and hilt: No damage.

Scabbard: Silver throat shows tarnish as does the silver bottom cap.
No damage to throat, but the chape does have some light scratches and shows some uneven tarnishing in those areas.
No deep scratches or dents or anything like that, but it’s not pristine either.
Scabbard Leather is excellent with a few small dents but no scuffs that would show the brown of the leather beneath the blue.

Blade: Very bright yet. Running one’s finger down the edges will reveal more that a dozen small "V" cuts on the edge, mostly on one side as though they’re small "V" cuts cause by sword fighting!. (easier to feel)
Corrosion pitting on both sides of the blade.
The blade has not been sharpened.
Leather spacer between the hilt and the throat is still there and in good condition.

Overall: A beautiful sword that does show some age.

Blade is marked in an oval in the fuller, “ F. & A. Helbig Steinbach an der Steyr
gaefler
Not well marked, with an electric pen as were all of this early makers pieces. But a Nice sword.

And guaranteed to be 100% authentic and original and as stated.
